Abstract : This study analyses the costs and returns of mango production for export in the São Francisco River Valley of northeast Brazil. Data were obtained from regional companies that produce and export mangoes. The results indicate that each exported box of mangoes, weighting 4.2 kg, has a production cost of US$0.68, processing cost of US$2.39, transport and customs cost of US$1.55, and a cost of US$0.48 as commission for the importer. Since the average annual price of a mango box in the North American market is US$6.00, the farmer gets a net gain of US$0.90 and a benefit/cost ratio of US$1.18.
