Abstract : The export of mangoes from Taiwan to Japan has been prohibited for a long time because of possible infestation with Dacus dorsalis Hend. and D. cucurbitae Coq. Laboratory tests were carried out in the former country in 1973-74 to evaluate quarantine measures. When fruits (of the varieties Irwin and Haden) artificially infested with D. dorsalis (which is more resistant than D. cucurbitae to fumigation with ethylene dibromide (EDB)) were immersed in hot water (48-50 deg C) for 20 min, fumigated with EDB at a rate of 12 g/m3 for 2 h at 20 deg C, and then stored at 7-10 deg C for 4 days, no survivors were obtained from an estimated 134 637 pupae. Determination of the concentration of EDB by gas chromatography showed that a concentration X time product of over 7 g/h/m3 would ensure 100% mortality by the combined treatment. The fruits appeared to be unaffected by the treatment. As the Japanese authorities were satisfied with the results of these tests, the export of Taiwan mangoes to Japan commenced in July 1976.
