Abstract : Digital images from mangoes cv. Tommy Atkins at physiologically mature stage were obtained from an X-ray-molybdenum target. After digital processing by filtering and pseudo colours technique, internal regions of the fruit can be discriminated in different levels of radiological density, i.e. three main zones: an intermediary region corresponding to a high proportion of liquid (region between pulp and peel), a more enhanced region in orange colour (constituted by fibres and the pulp) and a region predominantly dense without practically no transmission of x-ray, corresponding to the seed. Furthermore, even in the peel region, where practically all x-ray beams were transmitted, the pseudo colours allow the visualization of the full periphery of the fruit. A group of digital images are presented demonstrating advantages of the method as a simple noninvasive quality control test for mangoes in packinghouses.
