Abstract : This special issue, which contains 20 papers and reviews, gives an overview of plant tissue culture and the research pursued in this fast progressing facet of biotechnology. Nicotiana tabacum has been given emphasis on account of the huge amount of work done on varied aspects using it as a model system. Other topics include: micropropagation and in vitro cloning of forest trees (including gymnosperms, trees of the desert and those meant for biomass production utilizing semi-alkaline soil, fruit trees such as Carica papaya and Mangifera indica); a commercial cut flower; haploids from microspore culture; postharvest biotechnology; isolation of antimicrobial active principle and production of vaccines, antibodies and therapeutic proteins from transgenic plants, genetic transformation for disease resistance; and in vitro strategies for the conservation of phytodiversity.
