Abstract : The organic matter in soil samples, collected from mango orchards in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India, from September 2000 and 2001 at 3 depths (0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm) and 3 horizontal distances from the roots of mango (30, 60 and 90 cm), has detrimental effects on the population of Hemicriconemoides mangiferae at different depths and distances around the roots of mango plant (Mangifera indica). The regression analyses of pooled phytonemas showed a negative correlation between soil organic matter and H. mangiferae population, except at 0- to 20- (P>0.687) and 20- to 40-cm (P>0.585) depths, and 60-cm distance during 2000-2001. A significant positive correlation was observed at 0- to 20-cm depth (P>0.418) and at 30-cm distance during 2001-2002, when the organic matter was found to be least effective.
