Abstract : Cerrado soils are characterized by calcium deficiency associated with aluminium toxicity. The use of gypsum results in a decrease of these problems and increased root growth. Results are presented from experiments in Brazil with annual (maize, wheat and soyabeans) and perennial crops (mango, orange, coffee and sugarcane) which show increases in productivity in response to the use of gypsum. The recommended dose varies with soil clay content, being greater for perennial crops than for annual crops in the same soil. Economic analysis showed the viability of transport of gypsum for use in areas at large distances from the source.
