Abstract : Hand-picked, firm and healthy fruits of uniform size and maturity from the mango cultivars Arka Punit, Arka Anmol, Arka Aruna, Sundar Langra, Alfazli and Lanra (control) were selected from a garden at Bhagalpur, Bihar, India, during 1998 and 1999. Fruits were kept in open trays lined with newspaper and stored at ambient temperature ranging between 33±2 and 37±2°C. Analysis of different quality parameters were performed at 2-day intervals from the 1st until the 13th day after harvest. Physiological loss in weight and spoilage increased gradually in all cultivars with prolonged storage. Economic life (determined by counting the number of days following harvest after which the cumulative spoilage percentage exceeds 12%) was 11 days in all cultivars, except Alfazli (13 days). Ascorbic acid and acidity decreased with prolonged storage in all cultivars. Total soluble solids, sugars, carotenoids and respiration rate increased with storage up to the 9th day and decreased thereafter in all cultivars.
