Abstract : Natural dyes were extracted by boiling onion skins, and cashew, mango and teak leaves (10% w/v) in water for 30 minutes. Mordants were applied during dyeing, alum, potash or common salt (5 g/litre). Most of the natural dyes extracted showed no affinity with textile unless with a mordant, which was applied on the fabric before dye application. The colour produced on textile was dependent on the mordant used. The corresponding colours, and colour responses to light and washing, for each mordant and plant parts used, are tabulated.
