Abstract : Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the shelf life and quality of mangoes cv. Kent for export during the 2003 mango season. A total of 6 1-MCP rates (0, 100, 200, 300, 600 and 900 nl/litre) were compared. In addition, a semi-commercial experiment was done using only the best rate (300 nl/litre) plus an untreated control. It was found that 1-MCP at 300 nl/litre delayed the ripening process, maintained firmness longer and lengthened the shelf life of Kent mangoes by 4 days.
