Abstract : In a survey conducted in the southern region of Sri Lanka during 1999-2002, more than 100 isolates of F. nygamai were obtained from soil and naturally infected plants (maize, mango, orchids, rubber, tea, rice, watermelon, chili [Capsicum sp.], banana, citrus, guava and bean [Phaseolus vulgaris]). Information on growth rate, chlamydospore morphology, and mode of production of micro- and macroconidia is provided. F. nygamai shows affinity to some species of the section Elegans due to the presence of falcate to almost straight macronidia and the production of chlamydospores. Thus, the inclusion of F. nygamai in section Elegans was proposed. A key to Fusarium spp. in Sri Lanka is presented.
