Abstract : A survey of Khatana and Waghai forests in Western Ghats, India, from May 1998 to April 2000, recorded some important and common plants used in folk religion and mythology. Information is given on the vernacular names, occurrence and distribution, morphological characters and aesthetic values of some of these plants, including Aegle marmelos, Ficus benghalensis, Mangifera indica, Ocimum sanctum [O. tenuiflorum], Sesamum indicum, Cocos nucifera, Musa paradisiaca, Cynodon dactylon and Oryza sativa. Plants and specific plant parts described in folk songs and used in offerings, rites and decorations are also discussed.
