Abstract : A study was conducted during 2003 in Mohanpur, Nadia, West Bengal, India to investigate the initial fruit test, subsequent fruit shedding, weekly rate of fruit drop and fruit retention in 9 mango cultivars (Meghlanthan, Totapuri, Kishanbhog, Langra, Bombay Yellow, Bombay Green, Himsagar, Neelum and Alphonso). The number of fruit set per panicle varied between 45.08 (Totapuri) and 86.83 (Alphonso). Fruit drop percentage per panicle was high in all cultivars, ranging from 96.97 (Meghlanthan) to 98.80% (Alphonso). There was no significant variation among cultivars for number of fruit retention per panicle, which varied from 0.96 (Kishanbhog) to 1.79 (Neelum). Weekly rate of fruit drop was maximum within 3 weeks after fruit set in all cultivars. Most cultivars also showed a high rate of fruit drop during mid April.
