The variability of rainfall in Konkan region.

Abstract : The rainfall distribution pattern in Konkan region, Maharashtra, India was studied using weather data collected from 1972 to 2003. The weekly, monthly, seasonal and annual rainfall data, as well as the onset and end of the rainy season were obtained. Rainfall analysis indicated the suitability of the region for rainfed rice production, as well as production of the following crops: cashew nut, mango, areca nut, coconut and anola (Phyllanthus emblica). The mean week of the start of the rainy season was on 11-17 June, while the mean week of the end of the rainy season was on 1-7 October. The mean duration of the rainy season was 119 days (17 weeks), and the longest and shortest durations of the rainy season were 19 and 15 weeks, respectively.
