Genetic improvement of mango: methods, results, limitations and strategies.

Abstract : Notes are given on genetic resources of mango in Brazil, with reference to domestication and classification, collections and germplasm banks, and potential, uses and problems associated with genetic resources. Breeding of polyembryonic rootstocks with resistance to diseases, including Ceratocystis fimbriata, and of trees with resistance to pests and diseases is discussed. The application of biotechnological methods to genetic improvement of mango is also considered and relevant techniques are outlined. Recent advances in the genetic improvement of mango in Brazil include the development of pest and disease resistance, reduction in the incidence of malformed inflorescences and evaluation of physcial characteristics of fruit.
