Abstract : Brazil is a major global producer of mangoes, with annual production in excess of 850,000 t (3% of global production). During 2004, 3.61% of global production was exported from the countries of origin, as compared with 1.8% in 1996. During 2004, exports from Brazil accounted for 11.7% of world trade in mangoes. The USA is the main importer of mangoes (33.7%), followed by the Netherlands, which re-exports mangoes to the rest of Europe. Consumption of mangoes in Europe grew at an average rate of 15% of volume per year between 1984 and 2003. Similarly, a growth of 12% per year was observed in the USA. Per capita consumption of mangoes in Brazil is 888 g, being highest in the northeast (1068 g/person per year).
