Abstract : Mango (Mangifera indica) is one of the most important tropical fruits cultivated in Brazil with a production area higher than 70?000 hectares, and a production of 970?000 tonnes. Its production and exportation are mostly developed at the tropical semiarid conditions in northeastern Brazil, 80% of which is concentrated on one cultivar, Tommy Atkins. The mango breeding programme of Embrapa Cerrados had the objective of developing cultivars superior to Tommy Atkins in terms of productivity, resistance to diseases and physiological disorders, and better fruit taste. Roxa Embrapa 141, Alfa Embrapa 142, Beta and Lita, cultivars released between 1998 and 2002, have excellent characteristics not only for fresh consumption, but also for the processing industry. Recently, seven new mango hybrid selections were evaluated under Embrapa Cerrados and other Brazilian ecosystems, such as semiarid conditions in northeastern Brazil, to evaluate genotype response to new environments. Hybrid selections CPAC 23/86, CPAC 22/93, and CPAC 165/93 showed a yield of 345, 395 and 398 fruits per plant, respectively. These selections also presented red-purplish to red-yellowish fruits that were very sweet and had firm pulps. Hybrid selections CPAC 263/94 showed the highest pulp yield (88.2%), while hybrid selections CPAC 463/94 and CPAC 58/95 had the best fruit taste. Generally, all hybrid selections showed better disease resistance, pulp breakdown as well as pulp quality than the two commercial mango cultivars Tommy Atkins and Heidi. This paper evaluates the yield and incidence of some diseases and pulp breakdown as well as fruit quality of the seven hybrid selections compared with cultivars Tommy Atkins and Heidi under cerrado conditions.
