Abstract : A field trial was conducted during 2001/02 and 2002/03, in Nadia, West Bengal, India, to determine the number of sprays of conventional monocrotophos required at normal doses to control mango hoppers (Amritodus atkinsoni, Idioscopus clypealis and I. niveosparsus). The treatments consisted of single, double or triple sprays of monocrotophos 0.05% at 15-day intervals starting from the pre-blooming stage and an untreated control. Three sprays of monocrotophos reduced the hopper population to almost zero (0.60 to 0.71 per panicle) and increased the fruit yield to 58.82 kg per plant, followed by two sprays of monocrotophos. Avoidable yield losses were 89.3 and 85.1% with three and two sprays of monocrotophos, respectively.
