Abstract : Malformation of mango, a disease of international importance, is caused by Fusarium subglutinans [Gibberella fujikuroi var. subglutinans]. A technique is needed to reproduce this pathogen consistently on mango. In this study, mangiferin, a natural phenolic metabolite, was isolated from leaves of mango cv. Amrapali. Malformation was reproduced by lowering the concentration of mangiferin through defoliation. In vitro growth of the pathogen was inhibited by mangiferin, with maximum inhibition at 10-2 M. Plants with the highest number of malformed buds and lowest mangiferin contents exhibited the highest fusarium population and died at the later stage.
