Abstract : The current status of mango breeding in China and abroad, including selection from seedlings, artificial crossings, mutation selections and application of biotechnology, is presented. Promising cultivars selected from seedlings include Haden, Irwin, and Keit. Promising cultivars bred by artificial crossings are the Indian cultivars Malika and Amrapli, the Australian cultivar R2E2, and the Chinese cultivars Jinhuangmango and Lupimango. Problems that exist with mango breeding are discussed. It is suggested that ploidy breeding will be of importance for mango breeding in the future.
