Abstract : This paper provides an overview of the postharvest handling technologies of fruits in the Philippines. Particular emphasis is given on the postharvest losses in bananas, mangoes, pawpaws, Citrus microcarpa and pineapples. Also discussed are the approaches and technologies to reduce postharvest losses in fruits and meet consumer requirements of quality and volume and the recent developments in the management of postharvest losses in perishable crops, specifically the modernization and development of the agriculture and fisheries sector into one that is science and technology-based, more integrated into the national and international markets and thus highly productive and competitive. Four national issues and problems affecting the postharvest sector and the corresponding corrective measures for each are presented, as well as a case study illustrating the improvement of postharvest systems to reduce losses in pawpaw cv.
