Abstract : The investigation was conducted in Bihar, India, during 2001-02 to evaluate the performance of 12 mango hybrids, viz. Amrapali, Mallika, Prabhashankar, Mahmood bahar, Sabri, Jawahar, Sunder Langra, Neelashan, Neelgoa, Ratna, Arka Aruna, and Arka Anmol, and to compare them with the local elite variety Langra in respect of regular bearing fruit set, fruit drop, yield and quality of fruits. All hybrids tried in this investigation have certain merits and demerits in comparison to Langra. Amrapali, Mallika and Prabhashankar were found better than Langra in terms of yield. Maximum fruit weight was recorded in Ratna and Mallika, Ratna, Amrapali, Prabhashankar, Mahmood bahar and Sunder Langra were found less Susceptible to fruit drop. However, Langra topped in stone/pulp ratio, closely followed by Amrapali All the hybrids showed regular bearing tendency. High total soluble solid content was recorded in Amrapali. Mallika and Jawahar. Based on the results, Prabhashankar was found suitable for early fruit maturity, and Amrapali and Mallika for mid-late season for the regular bearing of high-yielding, quality mango fruits in the Gangetic plains of eastern Bihar. However, Langra with some good qualities may be continued to grow as a commercial variety.
