Abstract : This paper discusses the economic importance of rainfed fruit crops, viz., ber [Ziziphus mauritiana], custard apple [Annona reticulata], fig [Ficus carica], tamarind [Tamarindus indica], mango [Mangifera indica], pomegranate [Punica granatum], and aonla [Phyllanthus emblica], in arid regions of India. Further, the concept of contract farming is defined as a system of production and supply of agricultural/horticultural produce under forward contract between producer/suppliers and buyers. The essence of such an arrangement is the commitment of the producer/seller to provide dryland fruits at a time and a price and in quantity required by a known and committed buyer.
