Abstract : The species composition and richness in home gardens in Rangpur district of Bangladesh were studied during August-November 1997. The study covered 80 households from two Thanas (sub-district). Farm categories were sampled as large, medium, small and marginal size. A total of 77 perennial species were recorded from the 80 households. The density of the species such as betel nut [Piper betle], mango, jackfruit and neem [Azadirachta indica] was very high while the density of some other species such as bael [Aegle marmelos], litchi [Litchi chinensis], kamranga [carembola] and koroi was very low. The farmers prefer multipurpose trees, followed by timber species. Higher tree crop intensity and higher percentage of income from home gardens were noted in the smaller farms than the in large farms. In spite of land constraint in Bangladesh, there were some vacant niches in the home gardens that can be taken under new plantation.
