Abstract : A study was conducted to investigate the effect of mango cv. Khom used as an interstock on the growth of cultivars Irwin and Keitt, in plastic greenhouses in Okinawa, Japan during 2004-06. Three-year-old mango seedlings native to Taiwan were grown in 10-litre pots and used as rootstocks. Khom as an interstock decreased the shoot growth and leaf size in both Irwin and Keitt. Khom trees grafted on mango seedlings native to Taiwan showed the lowest value for total shoot length/tree, confirming that Khom was a dwarf cultivar. The values of total shoot length, leaf number, leaf area per tree, and circumferences of the rootstock, interstock and scion were significantly lower for trees with Khom as an interstock compared to trees with the same cultivar interstock. No information about mango fruit production on dwarf rootstock is available in literature as well as in the present study.
