Abstract : This study was conducted to: (i) examine the socioeconomic characteristics of mango orchardists; and (ii) to explore the relationship between socioeconomic features and the extent of their adoption of improved mango cultivation practices. Data were gathered from 188 mango orchardists in Behat, Saharanpur District and Siyana, Bulandshahar District in Uttar Pradesh, India, during 2003-04. It was found that most of the orchardists were more than 60 years old and had finished high school education. Most of the orchardists lived in joint families and had 5-8 family members. Their main occupation was mango farming, with subsidiary occupations, including poultry and livestock farming and rendering of other services, and had more than one acre land holdings. Most of the orchardists had low social participation and their socioeconomic status were significantly associated with the extent of their adoption of improved mango cultivation practices.
