Crops, browse and pollinators in Africa: an initial stock-taking.

Abstract : FAO, through the FAO/Netherlands Partnership Programme, supported the initial establishment of a regional African Pollinator Initiative, the development and publication of its Plan of Action in 2003, and an initial stock-taking of pollinator-dependent crops and browse plants in Africa. This publication cover topics on: identifying the state of knowledge, i.e. farmers' knowledge in Kenya, farmers' and extensionists knowledge in Ghana, research and civil society organizations (knowledge of pollination); initial assessments and lessons learned, i.e. fruit crops (deciduous fruit in South Africa, watermelon in Kenya, mango in Ghana, pawpaws in Kenya, avocado in Kenya), nut crops (cashew in Ghana), oil crops (coconut in Ghana, groundnut in Ghana, oil palm in Ghana), browse (acacia pods in Kenya, indigofera in Kenya), beverage and stimulant crops (coffee in Kenya).
