Abstract : Five hundred 12-year-old trees of mango cultivar Hongxiangya were subjected to heavy pruning. All the 1- to- 2-year-old non-bearing branches were cut out, the non-bearing branches on the top of the crown which were >2 years old were headed back, and all or part of the leaves of the bearing branches were thinned out. Pruning was carried out on 1 June. This heavy summer pruning markedly improved fruit finish, reduced fruit surface diseases, increased the percentage of fancy grade fruit by 11.58%, with no negative effect on the yield of treated trees.
