Abstract : An experiment was conducted on mango cv. Tainong No. 1 to study the effect of girdling on the control of vigorous shoot growth and early bearing. The treatments comprised girdling, spiral girdling and scoring. The net photosynthetic rate and soluble sugar content in the root phloem was significantly reduced by all treatments compared with the control. In the second year after planting, the number of inflorescence per plant was 49 when scoring treatment was used. In the third year after planting, the number of inflorescence was 193, 183, 170 and 22 for girdling, spiral girdling, scoring and the control, respectively.
