Effect of Ethrel on ripening of some varieties of mango (Mangifera indica L.) fruits.

Abstract : Mango fruits (3 early, 4 mid-late and 5 late maturing cvs) were placed in a closed galvanized chamber with or without a beaker containing an aqueous solution of Ethrel [ethephon] at 10 000 p.p.m. Exposure to Ethrel reduced the time required for fruit ripening to 48-65, 70-92 and 70 h in each of the 3 categories, respectively, compared with 118 h for controls; moreover, fruit colour was enhanced and weight loss greatly reduced. Data are also presented on the effects on fruit chemical composition.
