Abstract : The production of mango for export in Ecuador started 20 years ago. In the last season (October 2004-February 2005) exports were approximately 9 million boxes (36?000 t). The first years of the mango era were marked by good prices and low production costs and, as a result, the planting of thousands of hectares occurred. In the last 5 years, mango cultivation has been marginally or non-profitable, thus forcing growers to modify cultivation practices, change cultivars and consider processing and new markets. These measures, which are noted to have been necessary, are the subject of this paper.
