Abstract : Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate the emergence and performance of mangoes for rootstock, analysing the effect of the tegument of the seed and the rate of polyembryony. Initially, the fruits were collected for removal of the pulp and then the seeds were washed in water and placed to dry in a shaded and airy area. The evaluations began with the outset of seedling emergence. The means were compared by the Turkey test at 5% probability by the statistical programme SISVAR. Based on the results, the removal of the tegument of the seeds in the cultivars Manguita and Espada provided a significant increase in the emergence of plants and that a greater number of embryos per seed increased the number and proportion of smaller embryos, and these, to emerge, had a lower initial growth, increasing the period of formation of seedlings.
