Abstract : This study evaluated economically the use of new types of pesticides to control stem-end rot in mangoes caused by Lasiodiplodia theobromae, and made an investment analysis of mango growing in northeastern Brazil. An experiment involving four pesticides was conducted on the farm of FINOBRAS Agroindustrial SA, located in the municipality of Ipanguaçu, Rio Grande do Norte. In assessing the economic performance of the use of pesticides, production costs and revenues for one hectare of mangoes were calculated. The economic results indicate that difenoconazole had the best comparative performance. However, all treatments in the experiment resulted in economic loss. Therefore, it is recommended that new agronomic studies should be made to increase the physical productivity and economic efficiency of mango production in the region. In the investment analysis, the following indicators were used: net present value, internal rate of return, payback, and benefit/cost ratio. The analysis of these indicators showed that the activity does not provide significant financial gains when compared to the average gain of the country's economic activities. As the economic yield of mango production relies heavily on foreign markets marked by large price fluctuations, it is suggested that mango producers should diversify their production to make their income more stable and less susceptible to the whims of foreign markets.
