Abstract : The antianaemic potential of three plant extracts on phenyl hydrazine-induced anaemia in rabbits was investigated. Anaemia was induced in rabbits with phenyl hydrazine hydrochloride at a dose of 30 mg kg-1 b.wt by subcutaneous administration. Treatment of anaemia was done with ethanolic extract of Mangifera indica stem bark, aqueous leaves extract of Telfairia occidentalis and Amaranthus hybridus. In vivo investigation showed that oral daily dose of 20 mg kg-1 b.wt of the ethanolic extract of M. indica stem bark and aqueous leaves extract of T. occidentalis produced a significant (P0.05) antianaemic effect. The aqueous leaves extract of A. hybridus only produced a minimal antianaemic effect, reflected by a significant increase (P0.05) in haemogloin concentration. Phytochemical analysis of the plant extracts detected saponins, tannins, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids and alkaloids in the 3 extracts. This study therefore, shows that M. indica and T. occidentalis extracts have antianaemic potential.
