Abstract : An attempt has been made to calculate the growth rates of area, production and productivity of major vegetables and fruits of West Bengal during 1997-98 to 2006-07. The study reveals that proportions of fruit crops' and vegetables' area to Net Cropped Area in West Bengal are increasing gradually. Mango occupies the highest proportion of area to NCA among the fruits though the share of area under mango in total area is gradually decreasing. Nearly 5 per cent per annum change in total area of fruits is observed. Positive changes in area of all the major fruits crops are observed from the study except mandarin orange. The study observes 6.15 per cent per annum rate of change in production. The production of mango, mandarin orange and others category have been stagnant over the years. The study also observes stagnation in productivity for all the fruits except jackfruit. The study reveals that growth rate of area under vegetable cultivation is 1.63 per cent per annum. Positive growth rates of area of all the vegetables are observed from the study except the others category. Onion shows the highest rate of growth in area and production. Cabbage and cauliflower show stagnation in productivity growths.
