Abstract : In this paper, the genetic transformation of somatic embryos of mango cv. 'Ataulfo' with the Bell pepper J1 defensin gene was performed. In vitro tests showed that protein extracts from processed embryos inhibited the growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Aspergillus niger and Fusarium sp. In contrast, protein extracts from embryos without change did not affect the growth of fungi. These results, together with the amplification of J1 and nptII genes of the genomic DNA, show the incorporation and expression of the transgene in the embryos.
