Abstract : The Central Institute for Subtropical Agriculture in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, is an institute under ICAR for subtropical fruit crops research focusing on mango, guava, aonla (Phyllanthus emblica), bael (Aegle marmelos), pawpaw and some under-utilized fruits. The major emphasis is on the collection, evaluation, characterization, conservation and utilization of germplasm, and on crop improvement through conventional and biotechnological approaches. This publication provides an overview of the production and economic performance (demand and supply, and export and import) of the aforementioned crops in India, and presents the goals of the institute for 2030 and the strategies through which these goals will be achieved. Emphasis is on genetic enhancement, biotechnology, nanotechnology, geographical information system, natural resource management, secondary agriculture (processing of products and byproducts), inputs and energy management, biorisk management, policies, and technology transfer. It is expected that the analytical approach presented in this document will prove useful for researchers, policy makers and stakeholders to address future challenges for the growth and development of the agricultural sector, and ensure food and income security.
