Free living triungulin and male adult of Halictophagus sp. (Strepsiptera: Halictophagidae) from stylopized mango leafhoppers.

Abstract : Larviposition by neotenic female Halictophagus sp and its free-living adult male were studied using parasitized Idioscopus clypealis and Idioscopus niveosparsus collected from the mango trees in the UPLB Campus from 2008 to 2009. The mature tubular triungulins in the brood chamber of the neotenic female are positioned with their heads towards the brood canal opening. Larviposition took about 10-15 minutes. When the anterior region of the triungulin came out, the legs would seek a substrate to cling to, then the rest of the body bolted out of the opening. The next triungulin came out after an interval of 10-12 minutes. No free living adult male emerged successfully from all the cephalothecae examined. All three dissected male adults, however, were dark brown in color, with a pair of prominent and protruding compound eyes with many ocelli, a pair of flabellate antennae starting at segments 3 to 7, a pair of fan-shaped hindwings and a pair of reduced forewings.
