Abstract : Exposure of harvested fruits of three early, four midlate and five late varieties to an aqueous solution of 10 X 103 p.p.m. ethephon in a closed chamber hastened fruit ripening in all varieties. Fruits of early forms ripened in 48-65 h and of midlate and late forms in 70-92 h, as against 118 and 140 h in the controls. Among the early varieties, content of total soluble solids (TSS) and total and reducing sugar (TRS) increased after treatment in Alphanso and Kesar but decreased in Payri. In all late varieties and all midlate varieties except Nurjehan Pasand, TSS and TRS content rose after treatment.
