Abstract : Root distribution of mango trees (Mangifera indica) growing in soils with different physical and chemical characteristics, located in the Aragua valleys, East plains (Mesas) and West plains (Llanos) of Venezuela, is described. Soil texture exerted the greatest influence on lateral and vertical root distribution. The highest concentration of fine roots occurred at about 1.5 m from the trunk in coarse and medium textured soils, and at about 2.5 m in fine textured soils. Where soil macroporosity values reached 3 to 4%, root penetration was not observed.
