Abstract : Hawaiian mangoes for shipment to the mainland are frequently infested with the mango seed weevil (Cryptorhynchus [Sternochetus] mangiferae) and thus are subject to quarantine regulations. Ionizing irradiation is effective for control but can result in surface scalding of the fruit. Fruits ranging from 25% to fully-ripe were irradiated with gamma rays at 0-100 krad. Doses of 75 and 100 krad caused some scald but 25 krad, the minimum required for weevil control, had no effect on weight loss, edible quality or number of marketable days of 25 or 50% ripe fruits. Fully mature fruits were, however, damaged by this treatment.
