Abstract : Two-year trials were carried out with 15-year-old trees of 4 mango cvs. The branches were scored, half-girdled, girdled or ringed, stripped or notched. All treatments advanced ripening in relation to the control, with girdling or ringing giving the best results. The mean number of days to ripening in girdled or ringed trees was 92.11 compared with 103.72 in the control. The cv. Bombai was the earliest to ripen (81 days). In storage at room temperature (73 deg to 104 deg F) fruits from notched and control trees kept the longest (mean 5.5 days). Fruits of the cv. Hemsagar stored the longest. In storage at 40 deg fruits from scored trees kept the longest (mean 16.25 days). The cv. Hemsagar again stored the longest. The mean percentage dry matter was highest (23.75%) in fruits from girdled or ringed trees and it was also highest (22.28%) in the cv. Hemsagar.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:When five bark-cutting treatments were applied to 15-year-old trees of four varieties prior to observations on fruiting during the following two seasons, branch ringing was most effective in reducing the fruit-maturation period. Bombai had the shortest period in the control and all treatments. Four of the treatments improved fruit colour in Zardalu. Hemsagar tended to have the highest content of dry matter and the best storage quality at room and refrigerated temperatures, irrespective of treatment.
