Abstract : Most of the roots of two 17-year-old mango trees, cv. Haden on Criollo, were in the top 40 cm of soil and at a lateral distance of 70 cm from the tree, although roots were detected down to 150 cm and at over 3 m from the trees. Most roots of a 7 m tall grapefruit tree, cv. Foster on sour orange, were in the top 50 cm of soil and at 60 cm lateral distance from the tree. Root distribution was related to the physical and chemical properties of the soil, which changes from a loam in the top 40 cm to a clay-loam below.
