Abstract : Mature mango trees cv. Mulgoa (previously unpruned) were pruned once 4-41/2 months before flowering and subsequently the terminal clusters of new shoots were thinned annually in August. Fruit yield in the next 8 years increased 10- to 30-fold compared with the previous fruit yield of 65 fruits/year (mean over 14 years). This phenomenon is discussed in relation to the balance of endogenous growth substances.
