Abstract : The study was conducted at the five unions named Maharajpur, Baragharia, Sundarpur, Baliadanga and Gobratala Sadar upazila under Chapai Nawabganj district of Bangladesh during February to March 2004 to identify the constraints faced the mango growers in mango cultivation. Data were collected from the mango growers through interview schedule. The characteristics of the growers were: age, education, family size, farm size, area under mango cultivation, knowledge on mango cultivation, organizational participation, extension contact, cosmopoliteness and innovativeness. Scale score was used to determine constraints in mango cultivation while a constraint facing index (CFI) was used to make comparison among the 11 selected constraints. The findings revealed that an overwhelming majority (88.57%) of the mango growers were found having high constraints in mango cultivation while 11.43% had medium constraints. No mango grower was found having low constraint. Among the constraints, lack of mango processing industry had the highest CFI(308) which was followed by lack of training on mango cultivation CFI(293), lack of knowledge in identifying insect-pests and diseases CFI(280), lack of organic manures in orchards CFI(278), dry smokes from brick-field CFI(268), lack of contact of the mango growers with extension worker CFI(266), Mohalaga CFI(260), attack by Fruit borer CFI(229), Shoot galls (Locally known as Tabiz) due to infestation by mango shoot gall psyllid CFI(156), stagnation of water due to flood CFI(144) and shedding of flowers due to long-term drought CFI(136).
