Abstract : A reconnaissance soil survey was undertaken in Reniguntamandal of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh to evaluate the land capability classification and suitability of soils for paddy, groundnut, redgram, sugarcane, vegetables and mango. The soil belongs to Inceptisols, Entisols and Alfosols. Soil texture was finer and recorded regular decrease in organic carbon with depth in Typic Haplustepts. Low organic carbon and base saturation are major limitation in Typic Ustipsamments and Typic Ustifluvents unlike Typic Haplustalfs. In general, soil texture, base saturation, pH and organic carbon are the major limitation for crop growth in all the soils. In general observation, the limitation of the land characteristics varied from crop to crop. The soil-suitability classes for major crops can be improved if the corrective limitations (soil fertility characteristics) are altered through soil amelioration measures.
