Abstract : Leaves of 6 named mango types, grown in Serdang as bud-grafted trees and considered to be clones, were analysed electrophoretically to determine banding patterns for 4 enzyme systems (esterases, aspartate aminotransferase, acid phosphatases and alkaline phosphatases). The 6 types (Apple, Harummanis, Hj. Bakar, Irwin, Kent and Malgoa) showed distinct differences in size and shape of the tree crown and leaves and in fruit morphology and flavour. There was considerable variation in banding pattern between individuals of a single so-called clone, confirming that these could not all have been propagated from buds of the same parent tree. It is suggested the term variety should replace clone and that the present naming system for mango be standardized. Data are tabulated.
