Abstract : Mango fruits, cv. Chirtutapudigoa, were dipped in Ethrel [ethephon] at 0 - 4000 p.p.m. and kept in the open at room temperature. Fruit ripening was accelerated by all Ethrel treatments, most of the treated fruits being ripe within 6 days, compared with 12 days for controls. Fruit quality was little affected, but spoilage was greatly reduced by the higher concentrations. In another trial fruits were dipped in Polaris (5%) [glyphosine] 10 days before harvest (in September) and ripened in paddy straw. Total sugar content (mainly reducing sugars) was increased from 5.8 to 8.3% at harvest, and from 14.7 to 17.6% 10 days later. TSS contents were also enhanced on both dates and acidity was reduced at the latter date.
